Kyle P. Atkins

Healthcare AI consultant, author, software architect, and clinical educator.

I build software for healthcare organizations, write about clinical governance and artificial intelligence, and design national certification curricula for emergency medical services.

I serve as Founder & Chief Architect of Veritas Technology Solutions and author of The Healthcare Leader’s Guide to AI (2026) and the novel SAFEHARBOR: A BLACKBOX Story (2026). Nationally, I sit on the Board of Directors for the AHVAP Certification Center, chair the AHVAP Artificial Intelligence Governance Committee, and serve on multiple education and AI councils.

My work draws on twenty years across prehospital emergency care, hospital clinical value analysis, medical device field education, and doctoral research at Liberty University examining adult learning theory, leadership, and AI agentic coding usage by faculty and staff.

The Healthcare Leader’s Guide to AI

A Practical Framework for Implementing AI Without Losing the Human Element

Written for healthcare executives, clinical directors, value analysis leaders, and educators who make long-term decisions inside regulated systems. Rather than chasing specific software tools that age out in six months, the book lays out a practical operating framework: start with the workflow problem, build governance into initial intake, and keep a named human accountable.

Most hospital AI projects fail not because the underlying model is inaccurate, but because clinical leaders are handed vendor demos without a governance charter, a workflow integration plan, or post-deployment drift monitoring. I wrote this book to give executives, value analysis professionals, and clinical educators a practical operating manual they can take directly into committee rooms.

PART 01

Start With the Problem, Not the Technology

Vendor demos frequently turn into solutions searching for a clinical justification. Responsible implementation begins by mapping the broken workflow, the people affected, and the evidence base before asking whether AI belongs in the room.

PART 02

Governance at the Speed of Adoption

Departments can create generative AI accounts in minutes, and enterprise vendors ship embedded AI features every release cycle. Waiting to govern technology until after rollout fails; guardrails must sit inside initial intake.

PART 03

The Context Principle

An AI system’s output is bounded by the clinical, operational, and ethical context supplied to it. Structuring institutional context—policies, constraints, failure modes, and domain standards—prevents generic automation from eroding care quality.

PART 04

Explicit Human Accountability

An algorithm cannot hold a clinical license, sign a fiduciary audit, or answer to a patient’s family. Every AI-assisted workflow requires a named human decision-maker with the authority and training to override the system.

Why I Wrote The Healthcare Leader's Guide to AI

AI is moving faster than most healthcare organizations can respond to. The Healthcare Leader’s Guide to AI grew from a simple question: how do we embrace what AI makes possible without losing the human judgment, accountability, and context healthcare depends on?

#25 AI Starts With A Problem

AI didn’t make building easy. It made it accessible. The real shift isn’t the technology—it’s the responsibility to solve something real.

#23 The Peanut Butter Problem

If you have ever seen the exercise where kids are asked to write instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you know how quickly things can fall apart. Vague commands like "Put peanut butter on the bread" result in unopened jars sitting on top of a single slice. It’s a classic lesson in the difference between intent and execution.

#21 AI Didn’t Build It — A Human Did

When someone says, “Oh, you used AI for that,” the implication is clear: the work somehow counts less. But that reaction misunderstands what AI actually is. The human still defines the problem, guides the process, and decides what matters. AI doesn’t replace human ingenuity—it expands what one person can build.

From Framework to Function: Implementing AI-Driven Tools to Support Healthcare Value Analysis Practice

General-purpose chatbots assist with brainstorming and summarization, but they do not inherently understand the structure, terminology, evidence expectations, or decision pathways of healthcare value analysis. This poster traces the three-stage evolution from a general custom GPT assistant (1,000+ conversations) to a purpose-built PICO(TS)/GRADE Literature Synthesis engine, and finally to the national AHVAP AI Insight Hub—demonstrating that AI utility scales with domain context, workflow structure, and programmatic governance.

Augmenting Value Analysis with Artificial Intelligence: Frameworks, Tools and Ethical Guardrails

Across modern healthcare operations, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming embedded in nearly every layer of clinical and operational decision-making. As AI features increasingly appear in software platforms used by Value Analysis (VA) teams including evidence review tools, forecasting models, and product performance dashboards there is a growing need to shift the focus away from the technology itself and toward how it is thoughtfully applied.  While numerous frameworks exist to guide general AI adoption, most emphasize technical implementation over healthcare-specific governance. This poster introduces a dual-framework approach designed to support VA professionals in both identifying opportunities to integrate AI within the value analysis process and evaluating those tools through an ethical lens. By anchoring implementation in principles like transparency, bias mitigation, and clinical oversight, teams can avoid ad hoc adoption and instead apply structured guardrails to ensure AI aligns with patient-centered and organizational values.
